December 2: After State: Employment Opportunities in Academe

The Public Diplomacy Council of America’s Academic Study Committee invites colleagues navigating life after State to join a virtual program on employment in academe scheduled for Dec. 2 at 6:00 p.m. ET via Zoom. This session will offer insight into jobs for administrators and roles such as the Senior International Officer. Attendees will hear brief remarks from Fred Boll, Executive Director of the Global Learning Hub at UC Davis; Dan Kramer, Director of the International Studies Office at the University of Virginia; and Amir Reza, Dean of the Babson Academy for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurial Learning as well as Dean of Global Education. PDCA Co-President Vivian Walker will offer opening and closing remarks and moderate Q&A with the viewing audience. Dan Kramer is the Director of the International Studies Office (ISO) at the University of Virginia. In this role, he oversees Education Abroad, the International Students & Scholars Program, the Lorna Sundberg International Center, and the Center for American English Language & Culture. Prior to joining UVA, he was the Director of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program at the Institute of International Education (IIE) and worked closely with other key stakeholders – including the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, Fulbright Commissions, U.S. Embassies, and U.S. and international universities – on recruitment, selection, the pre-departure preparation, and in-country support of ca. 2,000 participants in over 130 countries. Dan previously worked in academia as a faculty member – teaching, conducting research, and directing study abroad programs for over a decade. He was the beneficiary of the Fulbright, DAAD, and other international scholarship programs after doing his undergraduate work at St. John’s University in Minnesota and before earning his Ph.D. from Harvard.

 
Alfred (“Fred”) Boll serves as the University of California, Davis Global Learning Hub's Executive Director, overseeing a dynamic team focused on preparing students to thrive and compete successfully in a globalized world by developing skills, knowledge, and networks. Fred held various leadership roles as a Foreign Service Officer at the U.S. Department of State, including oversight of programs that promote and facilitate global education. He has served as a lecturer in the University of Wisconsin-Madison's experiential study away program in Washington, DC, and trained as a lawyer and legal scholar with a focus on international humanitarian law, nationality in international law, and international human rights. He has a working knowledge of 12 languages, and served for ten years as a Delegate and Legal Adviser for the International Committee of the Red Cross. He holds a doctorate in international law from the University of Sydney in Australia, JD and MA degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a BA (Honors) in Political Science from the University of Chicago.

 
Amir Reza is the Dean of the Babson Academy for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurial Learning (Babson Academy), a dedicated unit within Babson College that inspires change in the way universities, specifically their faculty and students, teach and learn entrepreneurship. In this role, he is responsible for leading and collaborative advancement of Babson Academy’s strategy. Amir is also Dean of Global Education, responsible for advancing overall internationalization efforts for Babson College through curricular and cocurricular programs. He is the immediate past president of the Association of International Education Administrators, a membership organization dedicated exclusively to senior leaders in the field of international education. Amir has served on regional leadership boards for NAFSA: Association of International Educators, and has presented at numerous national and international conferences on international education. His research focus is on learning outcomes of higher education internationalization, intercultural development, and educating entrepreneurial leaders with a global mindset.
 

Vivian S. Walker is Practitioner in Residence at the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, Adjunct Professor in GU’s MSFS degree program, former chair of the Foreign Service Journal Editorial Board, co-editor of the Palgrave Macmillan Series in Global Public Diplomacy, and Faculty Fellow at USC’s Center on Public Diplomacy. Previously, she taught at the Central European University, the National War College, and the National Defense College of the UAE.
