Remembering K. M. "Mike" Jenson, by Karl Stoltz
We all knew him as just "Mike." He was an educator first and foremost. He served as a Regional English Language Officer in Indonesia, Poland, and Mexico, where he worked with local teachers and government officials to broaden the opportunities of thousands of young people through access to language, and to the many educational and career opportunities English unlocked.
RELOS come and go, but Mike's legacy endured because he made every effort to first integrate himself into local communities and better understand local cultures. This helped him teach and inspire more effectively. I first encountered Mike and his equally inspiring and cheerful wife Norma in Jakarta, where they helped me and my wife and our young son gain a better understanding of Indonesia.
Mike and Norma had adopted two children from the country, and nothing can teach you more about social norms and culture than that! I remember many pleasant evenings around Mike's and Norma's generous dinner table talking, sharing, and learning, and together we explored much of that country and became richer spiritually as a result.
At another diplomatic posting, I had the rare opportunity to meet Nelson Mandela, and today I am reminded of his wise words, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." I am certain Mike would object to being characterized as a weapon, but he changed the world. Semoga arwahnya tenang di sisi Tuhan, Mike.
